Lazulite |
 |
|
Vary from a mottled pale blue to dark blue. Transparent stones are pleo-chroic, showing blue and colorless, hut often lazulite is not transparent. Semi-translucent or opaque stones, found as small crystal fragments, may be polished, curved, or tumbled in make beads or decorative stones.

Localities include the USA, Brazil, India, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Madagascar, and Angola.

|
Lapis
lazuli has been worn in the belief that it will protect the
wearer from evil. It has been imitated by stained jasper,
and by paste with inclusions of copper. Imitation lapis lazuli
is also produced by Pierre Gilson in France, and has a very
similar composition to natural lapis lazuli.
